The original sense was “to turn someone into a troll”, hence more generally “to transform or bewitch through magic”. The intransitive sense “to practise magic” and the modern sense “to perform conjuring tricks as entertainment” developed from this.\nCompare Norwegian Nynorsk trylle and trylla, Danish trylle, Swedish trylla, Icelandic trylla, and Middle High German Middle High German trüllen (“to juggle, deceive”).",
